ABOUT ME
leadership with heart
My name is Vanessa Ordoñez. I was raised in Las Cruces, NM by hardworking Mexican American parents. At a young age, I was taught values of perseverance, humility, and discipline. Spanish was my first language, and I attended Oñate High School where I was part of the junior ROTC program and a varsity cheerleader. After graduating high school, I joined the United States Navy. By 2003, I was serving my country onboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman, notably during the war against Iraq. I later became a mother to two amazing children and relocated back home to Doña Ana County where I continued a career path in law enforcement and public service.
My most recent role was the Chief of Police in Anthony and currently an active U. S. Navy Reservist serving as a Master at Arms. I have had a rewarding career, and service isn’t just part of my life, it’s at the heart of who I am.

“Helping others isn’t
just my job, it’s my
calling”.

With over 20 years of combined military and police experience, I lead with courage, discipline, and compassion. I don’t just serve. I mentor, listen, and strive to make a difference every day.
As a proud Democrat, I believe public safety and strong communities go hand in hand with fairness, accountability, and equal opportunity for all. My commitment to Democratic values guides my approach to leadership, policy, and community trust.
Under my leadership, Anthony PD was named the #1 Safest City to live in New Mexico, a recognition I see as a reflection of the trust and collaboration between our officers and the community. I believe real safety begins with building strong relationships, listening to residents, and leading with fairness and integrity.
I have also earned a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration, graduating with top honors from Columbia College of Missouri, have numerous advanced training certifications and on the job experience. I am culturally competent, deliver equitable service and an effective modern leader.
As a mother, a wife, combat veteran, and law enforcement officer, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about authority, it’s about heart, commitment, and showing up for people when it matters most.
I’m running for Doña Ana County Sheriff with its people in my heart, ready to bring leadership that listens, empowers, and keeps our communities safe.
